Increased Iodine in Milk as a Countermeasure for Iodine-131

Possible addition of iodine salts to the cow's diet or to the milk in order to reduce the I131 uptake by the thyroid gland is discussed. Experiments are reported in which four cows were fed I131 and then fed 2 to 8.5 g stable iodide/day. The feeding of iodide caused the I131 secreted in the milk to fall at a rate of 13.5% per g added iodide. Thyroid counts on the cows indicate that iodide feeding caused the half life of thyroid I131 to decrease. The advantages of addition of iodide to the cow's diet and of direct addition to the milk are discussed. (D.L.C.)
