RADIOACTIVE RARE EARTHS FROM FALLOUT FOR STUDY OF PARTICLE MOVEMENT IN THE SEA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4030541
Samples of sea water were collected from the surface and at various depths at a number of locations in the Atlantic Ocean between 1956 and 1958. The samples were analyzed for Ce/sup 144/ and Pm/sup 147/. Results are compared with data on Sr/sup 90/ levels in the samples. The ratios Ce: Pm and Ce: Sr are interpretable in relation to the same ratios for production in fission explosions. Applications of these ratios as indicators of the age of fission product mixtures in sea water are discussed. Data indicate that Pm and Ce are removed from surface sea water by becoming associated with sinking particles. (C.H.)
