RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPE STUDIES

Journal Article · · Oceanus (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4806122
The program for analysis of long-lived radioisotopes from fallout in the Atlantic Ocean is described. Sampling problems and the expected movement patterns of Sr/sup 90/, Ce/sup 144/, Pm/sup 147/, and Cs/sup 137/ in the ocean are discussed. The results for Sr/sup 90/ in 1957 and 1958 show that more Sr/sup 90/ was found below 100 m than above that depth and that about three times more Sr/sup 90/ per unit area was found in the ocean than on land at comparable latitudes. Ce/sup 144/ and Pm/sup 147/, which were expected to associate with particles and to rate from each other as well, Ce/sup 144/ tending to stay longer in the upper layers. It is concluded that Pm/sup 147/ associates with inorganic particles sinking at rates >100 m per month, while Ce/sup 144/ associates with organic particles. The CHAIN 17 cruise of RV CRAWFORD around the Romanche Trench is described; the analyses of the ocean samples collected on this cruise are now in progress. (D.L.C.)
