The search for t{bar t} production in the lepton + jets channel using a secondary vertex b tag

The authors present preliminary results of a search for t{bar t} production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. the data were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF detector. They consider the Standard Model decay t{bar t} {yields} (e or {mu}){nu} + jjb{bar b}. In addition to a high momentum lepton plus multijets, the authors require the presence of a b quark jet. A b-quark jet is identified via a displaced vertex utilizing a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. The results include an analysis of 19.3 pb{sup {minus}1} of data collected in 1992-1993 and improvements for the analysis of data from the ongoing Tevatron run.
