The fluid flow and heat transfer during mould filling and subsequent solidification process of the bench mark casting have been simulated by a 3-D code which was developed at WTCM Foundry Research Centre by the present authors. It allows to calculate the metal flow, the location of the free surface and the heat transport during mould filling as well as during solidification. The details of mould filling and solidification process of the bench mark casting are described. The calculated mould filling pattern of the bench mark casting shows some characteristic features, such as an incompletely filled downsprue and the formation of waves during filling. The calculation gives the pouring rate as a function of time by using the free fall method. This feature can help users to analysis the mould filling pattern and improve the gating system. The slip condition has an influence on the mould filling. In the present case, a partial slip condition should be used. The mould filling process affected directly the temperature distribution at end of filling.
