Mixed aerosols of {sup 137}Cs and NH{sub 4}Cl

Journal Article · · Radiochemistry

The behavior of {sup 137}Cs during NH{sub 4}Cl formation from the vapor is studied. In the presence of a carrier (1 mg CsI), two types of radioaerosols are formed: {sup 137}CsI and Cs sorbed on metal oxides found in the support for the radioaerosol generator. Both form mixed-micelle aerosols with NH{sub 4}Cl, the strength of which is different and probably determined by the surface properties of the radioaerosol. The ability of {sup 137}Cs to form mixed aerosols with nonradioactive macrocomponents can be used to mitigate the consequences of accidents.
