RBE and OER measurements for d(50)-Be neutrons produced at the cyclotron CYCLONE (Louvain-la-Neuve) and RBE measurements for 650-MeV helium ions produced at the synchrotron SATURNE (Saclay) were perfomed using growth reduction in Vicia faba root meristems. For d(50)-Be neutrons, RBE increases from 2.8 to 3.6 and 4.1 for neutron absorbed doses decreasing from 0.9 to 0.4 and 0.25 Gy, respectively, /sup 60/Co-..gamma.. rays being used as reference. The OER for d(500-Be neutrons was found equal to 1.5 and the OER for /sup 60/Co was 2.6; their ratio (or gain factor) is then equal to 1.8 RBE of the 650-MeV He/sup 2 +/ beam, produced at SATURNE, was investigated as a function of depth in the irradiated medium, taking as reference the initial plateau region. For the dose range which could be investigated with Vicia faba, RBE increases from 1.4 to 1.5 and 2.0 at the beginning, middle, and end of the spreadout Bragg peak, i.e., at depths of 13, 15, and 17 cm, respectively. RBE of the He/sup 2 +/ beam in the initial plateau region was found equal to 1.1 with respect to /sup 60/Co-..gamma.. rays.
