Title: Intrinsic Bulk Quantum Oscillations in a Bulk Unconventional Insulator SmB₆

Abstract

The finding of bulk quantum oscillations in the Kondo insulator SmB₆ proved a considerable surprise. Subsequent measurements of bulk quantum oscillations in other correlated insulators including YbB₁₂ lent support to our discovery of a class of bulk unconventional insulators that host bulk quantum oscillations. Here we perform a series of experiments to examine evidence for the intrinsic character of bulk quantum oscillations in floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB₆ that have been the subject of our quantum oscillation studies. We present results of thermodynamic, transport, and composition analysis experiments on pristine floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB₆ and compare quantum oscillations with metallic LaB₆ and elemental aluminum. These results establish the intrinsic origin of quantum oscillations from the insulating bulk of floating zone-grown SmB₆. The similarity of the Fermi surface in insulating SmB₆ with the conduction-electron Fermi surface in metallic hexaborides is at the heart of a theoretical mystery.

The Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB₆) has been intensely studied in recent years as a potential candidate of a strongly correlated topological insulator. One of the most exciting phenomena observed in SmB₆ is the clear quantum oscillations appearing in magnetic torque at a low temperature despite the insulating behavior in resistance. These quantum oscillations show multiple frequencies and varied effective masses. Bulk transport paths through defects in floating zone and Al flux grown SmB₆

We investigate the roles of disorder on low-temperature transport in SmB₆ crystals grown by both the Al flux and floating zone methods. We used the inverted resistance method with Corbino geometry to investigate whether low-temperature variations in the standard resistance plateau arise from a surface or a bulk channel in floating zone samples. The results show significant sample-dependent residual bulk conduction, in contrast to smaller amounts of residual bulk conduction previously observed in Al flux grown samples with Sm vacancies. Samarium hexaboride (SmB₆) is an example of a Kondo insulator, in which strong electron correlations cause a band gap to open. SmB₆ hosts both a bulk insulating state and a conductive surface state. Within a Fermi-liquid framework, the strongly correlated ground-state electronic structure can be mapped to a simple state resembling a topological insulator. Although uncertainties remain, many experiments provide compelling evidence that the conductive surface states have a topological origin. Anomalous three-dimensional bulk ac conduction within the Kondo gap of ${SmB}_{6}$ single crystals

The Kondo insulator SmB 6 has long been known to display anomalous transport behavior at low temperatures, T < 5 K. In this temperatures range, a plateau is observed in the dc resistivity, contrary to the exponential divergence expected for a gapped system. Some recent theoretical calculations suggest that SmB ₆ may be the first topological Kondo insulator (TKI) and propose that the residual conductivity is due to topological surface states which reside within the Kondo gap. Insulators occur in more than one guise; a recent finding was a class of topological insulators, which host a conducting surface juxtaposed with an insulating bulk. Here, we report the observation of an unusual insulating state with an electrically insulating bulk that simultaneously yields bulk quantum oscillations with characteristics of an unconventional Fermi liquid. We present quantum oscillation measurements of magnetic torque in high-purity single crystals of the Kondo insulator SmB₆, which reveal quantum oscillation frequencies characteristic of a large three-dimensional conduction electron Fermi surface similar to the metallic rare earth hexaborides such as PrB₆ and LaB₆.
