The ASBR is a new anaerobic reactor process being developed by Dague and coworkers at Iowa State University. In the research reported in this paper, 12-liter laboratory ASBRs were used to treat whole swine wastes at reaction temperatures of 35, 25 and 20{degrees}C. The genus Caldicellulosiruptor contains the most thermophilic, plant biomass-degrading bacteria isolated to date. Previously, genome sequences from three cellulolytic members of this genus were reported (C. saccharolyticus, C. bescii, and C. obsidiansis). To further explore the physiological and biochemical basis for polysaccharide degradation within this genus, five additional genomes were sequenced: C. hydrothermalis, C. kristjanssonii, C. kronotskyensis, C. lactoaceticus, and C. owensensis. Mutualistic interaction between dichloromethane- and chloromethane-degrading bacteria in an anaerobic mixed culture: Mutualistic degradation of chlorinated methanes

The microbial mixed culture RM grows with dichloromethane (DCM) as the sole energy source generating acetate, methane, chloride and biomass as products. Chloromethane (CM) was not an intermediate during DCM utilization consistent with the observation that CM could not replace DCM as a growth substrate. Interestingly, cultures that received DCM and CM together degraded both compounds concomitantly.
