Environmental technologies: Solutions for the future

Compliance with tough federal, state and local regulations still spear heads most environmental spending. Hydrocarbon processing industry operators (HPI) walk a tightrope between marketplace competitiveness and environmental compliance. Having finite funds and long project lists, HPI management must structure and execute a business plan that keeps their facility operating within the confines of massive environmental regulation, while allowing them to pursue marketplace opportunities in a global economy. To help HPI operators improve their business planning, the ``Environmental Technology Index`` has been created to bridge the information gap confronting the industry. With access to current environmental technologies, HPI managers can stretch their funds and still meet environmental challenges. Innovative techniques that reduce, reuse and recycle pollutant/waste streams will require revisions to process design and product chemistry. Limited capital investment resources inhibit waste reduction/pollution prevention efforts. However, HPI operators must find and use conventional and emerging process technologies to develop a pollution prevention/business plan that will ensure attainment of environmental objectives. With access to current environmental technologies, HPI managers can stretch their funds and still meet environmental challenges.
