The transverse shear modulus G{sub 23} effect on the Mode III interlaminar fracture toughness characterization using the Edge Crack Torsion (ECT) specimen is studied. Simplified expression for the parameter controlling the load point compliance and strain energy release rate is obtained for desirable Mode III test lay-ups. Parameters influenced by the transverse shear modulus are isolated. Upper bounds and lower bounds for the inverse of the load point compliance and the Mode III toughness are identified. Comparison with experimental results indicates that the test data are more close to the lower bounds. The lack of information on G{sub 23} will not hamper the accurate prediction of the Mode III toughness using the ECT specimen. A good conservative prediction of the Mode III toughness can be obtained by assuming G{sub 23} = G{sub 12}
