Measurements of interlaminar fracture toughness in composite laminates under impact loading
- Osaka Univ. (Japan)
An impact fracture test method has been developed to measure fracture toughness under combined mode I/II loading using a center-cracked disk specimen. The test is executed in such a way that diametrical impact load are applied to the specimen, which is set with the crack inclining toward the direction of loading at a definite angle. Time variation of the energy release rate is accurately evaluated by the convolution integral based on the idea of the dynamic response function of the specimen. Dynamic and quasi-static tests were performed for interlaminar fracture toughness in a CF/epoxy composite. The results indicate that the fracture criterion based on the energy is not suited to interpret the fracture under combined mode loading in the present composite laminates. It was also found that the interlaminar fracture toughness tends to decrease with increasing loading rate for both pure mode I and II.
