The mode III fracture toughness testing method using a single axis loading machine is studied. Four point shear specimen and triple pantleg specimen are analyzed by the three dimensional finite element method in the elastic-plastic state. It is shown that the contact of upper and lower crack surfaces occurs in some special conditions. An appropriate specimen configuration and loading condition to avoid the contact of crack surfaces are determined for a four point shear specimen. The method to resolve the J integral by contour integration into J{sub II} and J{sub III} components is proposed. The conventional equation to evaluate the J integral using load-displacement record is also studied. The distributions of these components along the crack front are studied. Using these specimens, the mode III fracture toughness of aluminum alloy is measured and is compared with the mode I fracture toughness.
