Large area coatings such as infrared-mirrors and transparent heaters are widely used in buildings and vehicles. The spectral transmission and reflection of such thin films are time independent. Electrochromic (EC) systems are a new class of optical filters with voltage controlled transmission. One can choose the desired optical characteristics using a small voltage. This time dependence is very useful for different applications. In the laboratory the authors developed direct current sputtering as a method of preparation of the above mentioned mirrors and heaters. Following their previous experience they try to use the dc sputtering technique for the preparation of thin WO{sub 3} and MoO{sub 3} electrochromic films. This paper presents structural and optical properties of WO{sub 3} thin films and the operating characteristics of an electrochromic cell.
