New energy: understanding the crisis and a guide to an alternative energy system

Book ·
OSTI ID:7366575
The causes of the 1973-74 energy crisis are examined by studying the history of the energy industry. This recent energy crisis is not thought to involve real shortages of fuels, but was a result of the way the energy industry is organized and functions within the political economy. Considered a ''contrived event,'' the energy crisis is seen as part of an overall reorganization of the industry which resulted in raising oil prices, delaying the introduction of alternate energy sources, opening up more coastal waters for drilling, and initiating debates on the industry's plans for synthetic fuels production. Resistance to the industry's reorganization is found in a new political coalition of environmentalists and consumer and welfare rights organizations. This book is intended to be a guide for the continuing energy crisis. Efforts by local groups to regain control over energy are described, and a tentative plan for a decentralized energy system is presented. (BYB)
