Standard methods for radiochemical determination of cesium-137 in nuclear fuel solutions

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7364421

Solutions resulting from the dissolution of irradiated fuel elements primarily for the determination of burnup are analyzed for /sup 137/Cs radiometrically after at least a 130-day cooling period to allow for the decay of /sup 86/Rb and /sup 136/Cs. Cs is separated from the solution by precipitation with carrier as either CsClO/sub 4/ or Cs/sub 2/PtCl/sub 6/. /sup 137/Cs is measured by ..gamma.. spectroscopy as the 0.66-MeV /sup 137m/Ba ..gamma..-ray. The precision on a single laboratory basis was 1.4 percent (chloroplatinate) and 1.7 percent (perchlorate) and on a comparison between laboratories was 1.9 percent (chloroplatinate) and 1.3 percent (perchlorate).
