The determination of /sup 137/Cs to U ratio in reactor fuels after irradiation provides a measure of the U atom percent fission. The irradiated fuels are aged for a sufficient period of time to reduce the /sup 136/Cs activity to a small amount through decay. Due to the growth of /sup 134/Cs resulting from the neutron capture by /sup 133/Cs, the procedure is limited to samples exposed to less than0.6 x 10/sup 21/ nvt. Preferably, the fuel cladding is leached or dissolved with the fuel to maintain the true ratio of fission product /sup 137/Cs to U. The /sup 137/Cs is separated by precipitation with carrier as either CsClO/sub 4/ from a solution of ethyl alcohol and HClO/sub 4/ or as Cs/sub 2/PtCl/sub 6/ from a HCl-ethyl alcohol solution. The /sup 137/Cs is then measured by ..gamma.. spectrometry. (BLM)
