Standard method for analysis of natural gas by gas chromatography
Components in a sample of natural gas are separated by gas chromatography and compared to corresponding components separated under identical conditions from a reference standard mixture of known composition. Both an adsorption-type and a partition-type column are required to make a complete analysis. The adsorption column must separate O/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, and CH/sub 4/, and a column packed with molecular sieve would affect this separation in about 6 min. The partition column must separate ethane through pentanes and CO/sub 2/. The preparation and arrangement of columns found by test to meet the requirements of this method are described in the appendix to the method. The numerous heavy-end components of natural gas are grouped into irregular peaks by reversing the direction of the carrier gas through the column at such time as to group the heavy-ends either as C/sub 5/ and heavier, C/sub 6/ and heavier, or C/sub 7/ and heavier. Interpretation of the results is carried out by comparing peak heights or peak areas with those obtained from standards. (BLM)
