Standard method for analysis of natural gas by gas chromatography

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7089625
This method covers the determination of the complete chemical composition of natural gases and similar gaseous mixtures. The method may be abbreviated for the analysis of lean natural gases containing negligible amounts of hexanes and heavier hydrocarbons, or for the determination of one or more components, as required. Components in a sample of natural gas are physically separated by gas chromatography and compared to corresponding components separated under identical operating conditions from a reference standard mixture of known composition. The numerous heavy-end components of natural gas are grouped into irregular peaks by reversing the direction of the carrier gas through the column at such time as to group the heavy-ends either as C/sub 5/ and heavier, C/sub 6/ and heavier, or C/sub 7/ and heavier. The chromatogram is interpreted by comparing the peak heights of the pentanes and lighter components with those obtained on the reference standard. The total area under the reverse flow peak is compared to the area of the pentane peaks in the standard.
