Standard method for analysis of commercial butane--butylene mixtures by gas chromatography

A gas-chromatographic method is described for the determination of the composition of butane-butene mixtures and of samples of isobutylene at least 98 percent pure. A benzyl cyanide-silver nitrate mixture supported on diatomaceous earth served as the column material for separation of the components of the mixture. The composition of the sample is determined from the recorded chromatogram by comparing peak heights or areas with those obtained from a standard sample. The repeatibility and reproducibility of the method are tabulated for various mixtures. (BLM)
