Bill Kaffer shows advantages of voluntary audits

Growing demands for commission-ordered management and operation audits are becoming commonplace. Recommendations by Mr. Kaffer of Theodore Barry and Associates show utilities that a 1 or 2 percent saving can result in millions in savings. The cost savings are spread over a wide range of functions, fuels management, work force management, vehicle usage, inventory management, construction management. The author points out that a voluntary audit enables an unhurried audit that will improve operations and save money, and the utilities will have a study report ready if an audit is ordered. A public stigma attached to a commission-ordered audit will be avoided. (MCW)
