Adsorption energy of Cs and K on refractory carbides

The emission-adsorption characteristics of TiC, ZrC, HfC, NbC, and TaC in cesium and potassium vapor are studied by thermionic emission, contact potential difference, and surface ionization. The adsorption energy of alkali metals on metal-like refractory carbides is governed by both the work function of the adsorbent and the main quantum number of the valence electrons of the adatom. The results are discussed on the basis of a model of configurational interactions, with intraatomic correlations at the adatom taken into account. (AIP)
