Nitriding of TiC, ZrC, HfC, NbC, and TaC powders and carburization of TiN, ZrN, HfN, NbN, and TaN nitride powders at 1500 to 2500 deg C is described. X-ray and chemical analyses of the obtained solid solutions of refractory metal- carbonitride were made for equilibrium states, activation energies of carburization and nitriding, temperature dependence of lattice parameters, and thermal stability of their respective nitrides and carbides or mixed carbonitrides.
