An ionization factor of approx.1 x 10/sup 19/ cm/sup -2/ at an electron energy of about 2.5 keV was achieved in an electron-beam source of multiply charged ions with a superconducting solenoid. (The ionization factor is the product of the electron flux density and the duration of the electron-ion interaction.) Beams of carbon nuclei (/sub 6/C/sup +6/), nitrogen nuclei (/sub 7/N/sup +7/), argon ions with a charge of +14 (/sub 18/Ar/sup +14/), xenon ions with a charge of +29 (/sub 54/Xe/sup +29/) were produced. Preliminary experimental data are reported on the cross sections for sequential ionization of the positive ions of these elements. (AIP)
