Sedimentation studies of ..gamma..-irradiated dilute solutions of polyisoprene are reported. Irradiation with small doses led to a sharp change in the fractional composition of polyisoprene, and the sedimentation curve acquired a pronounced bimodal nature with complete separation of the peaks. At very low dose rates (0.05 Mrad), a peak that moved at high speed had already appeared. With increasing dose rate, the area of peak increases and becomes commensurate with the area of the basic peak. At doses >5 Mrad, precipitation is observed. In dilute hexane, ..gamma.. irradiation led to the formation of two fractions that sediment at different rates due to the formation of associates of macromolecules. The effects of time of irradiation and oxygen on sedimentation are reported also. (BLM)
