STUDY OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF FREE RADICALS IN $gamma$-IRRADIATED POLYISOPRENES (in Russian)

The nature and the kinetic properties of the free radicals formed in cis- and trans-polyisoprene exposed to gamma -radiation of a Co/sup 60/ source were investigated; the kinetic studies were carried out in the trans form which facilitates the capture of free radicals. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were obtained from the first derivative of the absorption curve of the irradiated polymers; concentration variations were determined from the amplitude changes of this function. Irradiation of the trans-polyisoprene at room temperature in vacuum to doses ranging from 10 to 150 Mrad resulted in the formation of stabilized free radicals. In the same dose range the number of cross linkages was found to increase wtth increasing dose while the destruction rate of the free radicals decreased as the density of the space lattice increased. The decomposition may be expressed by a second order equation. Irradiation at - 198 deg C yielded a higher concentration of free radicals than at room temperature. The method opens up possibilities for investigating the formation, decomposition, and capture of free radicals in polymers. (TTT)
