Radiolysis of polyisoprene with high content of 1,2 and 3,4 units (in German)

Thesis. The radiolysis of polyisoprene with a high amount of 1,2 and 3,4 units, with the double bond in the side chains, was investigated. In order to ascertain the changes, the increase in the molecular weight within the Pregel range, the sol-gel fractions within the gel range, the reduction of double bonds, the formation of dienes, the structure and concentration of the radicals, as well as the formation of H/sub 2/ and CH/sub 4/ have been determined. The results of the sol-gel measurements in relation to tho dose have shown that formation of the species starting the linking process, a mean G(S)-value of 2.5 has been found, with the reaction chain leading to four crosslinkages on the average. The G(S)- values and the length of the reaction chains are slightly dependent on the molecular weight. In order to be able to determine the role of double bonds in the formation of cross-linkages, the reduction of double bonds has been determined by ir spectroscopy. Furthermorc, the influence of dose rate, irradiation temperature, and various additives has been investigated. ESR spectra were measured and the diene bonds were measured by uv spectroscopy. From the results it is seen that the process of cross linking in polyisoprenns with a high amount of 1,2 and 3,4 units proceeds via a chain reaction, whereas the crosslinking in 1,4 polyisoprenes occurs in the conventional manner, i.e. by one ionization or excitation for every crosslinking event.
