$gamma$-INITIATED CROSSLINKING OF UNSATURATED POLYESTERS

Journal Article · · J. Polymer Sci.
Unsaturated polyesters containing 1.5, 3.2, and 4.8 double bonds per molecule (derived from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and propylene glycol) were crosslinked by gamma rays from Co/sup 60/. From sol fraction data and from measurements of the molecular weight between crosslinks of the corresponding gel, it is concluded that for polymers containing more than about 4 double bonds per molecule, gamma initiated bond formntion is in accord with the reported chain reaction scheme for such systems. At lower degrees of unsaturation, a significant fraction of the initially available unsaturated sites was consumed at the gel point so that subsequent radiation (and radical formation), which effects chain growth at the expense of intramolecular crosslinking, appears to be in part, a random process. It is suggested that radiation-induced changes in unsaturated polyesters are best described in terms of the simultaneously occurring chain growth and intramolecular crosslink formation. (auth)
