Environmental determinants of human cancer are reviewed, with particular emphasis on chemical carcinogens. Topics covered include: the prevalence of human cancer, categorization of chemical carcinogens, quantitative and qualitative extrapolation from toxicological data, the alleged distinctions between species-specific carcinogens and between tumorigens and carcinogens, general epidemiological considerations, and an evaluation of the benefit-risk calculus. Chemicals of suspected or known carcinogenicity include: chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides such as aldrin, dieldrin, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane; polynuclear compounds such as benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(a)anthracene; bis(chloromethyl) ether; 2-naphthylamine; benzidine; 2-aminobiphenyl; 2-nitrobiphenyl; estrogens; and carbon tetrachloride. Occupational situations reported in connection with cancer incidence include: working with chimney soot, dye and rubber manufacturing, coal and metal mining, asbestos handling, and polyvinyl chloride manufacturing.
