Spin-state determinations and spacings of neutron resonances for /sup 187/Os and /sup 189/Os

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)
The spin states of 25 resonances for (/sup 187/Os + n) and 40 resonances for (/sup 189/Os + n) have been determined with probabilities of correctness greater than 80%. Spin assignments were made on the basis of the ratios of low-energy ..gamma..-ray intensities associated with neutron capture in the resonances. For both nuclei, the spin distributions are consistent with a (2J + 1) level-density distribution. The level spacings favor the theory of Dyson and Mehta, but an uncorrelated Wigner distribution cannot be ruled out definitely. These results provide important input parameters for the astrophysical determination of the age of the universe by the /sup 187/Re ..-->.. /sup 187/Os nuclear dating technique. (AIP)
