Cadmium chloride solutions were added to cultures of hamster ovary cells in various concentrations and cells were examined for chromosomal aberrations at intervals. At a concentration of 2 x 10/sup -6/ M, cells showed no damage up to 24 h; at 48 h about 40 percent of cells showed chromatid damage; at 72 h 80 percent of metaphase cells had shattered chromosomes; after 1 week an increased number of tetraploid cells appeared. All concentrations had an inhibitory effect on mitosis. (HLW)
