The experimental system proposed for the formation of excimers from their van der Waals ground states is based on the production of a high steady-state concentration of the dimers or oligomers by free-jet expansion. These will be excited by low-energy resonant electron bombardment to yield excimers or exciplexes in an excited vibrational state. The evolution of the design criteria for this system is described.
