Highest offshore oil platform stands in active quake area. [Hondo Platform California]

Journal Article · · World Coal; (United States)

Built to earthquake design criteria in California, the world's highest oil production platform jacket, an 865-ft-high steel structure, is being pinned to the ocean floor 5.5 miles off the southern California coast. Because the $67-million platform is only 50 miles from the San Andreas fault, seismic criteria are the dominant factor in the design of the jacket, the tower-like base of tubular steel that supports the deck and serves as a drilling template. The platform stands in 850 ft of water, topping the greatest platform depth in the North Sea by 320 ft. With its three-level deck in place, the Hondo Platform, named for its production field, will rise 945 ft above the floor of the Santa Barbara Channel.
