Exxon's offshore oil platform nearly doubles water-depth record

The design and construction of the Hondo platform erected in 1976 in 850 ft of water near Santa Barbara, Calif. are described. Tough design criteria for earthquakes, wave forces and fatigue were met with a frame of steel tubes up to 900 ft-long and 54 in. in diameter. (LCL)
