Viking Piper: giant economy size laybarge

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7329209

During the first part of the 1976 season, the Viking Piper, giant semi-submersible laybarge laid 97 km (60 mi.) of 81-cm (36-in.) pipe line in just 50 days through waves that reached a maximum of 9 m (29 ft.)--without abandoning the pipe because of weather. And last year, in its initial work assignment, the Dutch-built vessel laid 64 km (40 mi.) of the same line through maximum wave heights of 10 m (33 ft.), also without need to lay down the line. In both periods, with 30-foot maximum waves, the maximum barge roll and pitch recorded was only 0.8 degrees and 0.6 degrees, respectively.
