A method is described for the determination of Fe, Cu, Mo, and W in ores by measurement of the x-ray fluorescence induced by irradiation with a /sup 109/Cd source. The samples were irradiated in cells having pure Cu bottoms, and in the determination of Fe, interference from BaO and CaO were reduced by using the fluorescence from the Cu substrate as an internal standard. The fluorescent radiation from the Cu substrate was also used in determining Cu in ores to reduce the interference from Fe and Pb. The Cu content was determined by difference by counting the fluorescence for a sample in a cell with a copper bottom and for a sample in a cell with a lucite bottom. W and Mo were determined simultaneously using the W L-series lines (E = 8.5 keV) while Mo was determined from the K-series (E = 17.5 keV). The method is limited to specimens with comparatively small composition variations. (BLM)
