Parametric excitation and suppression of the ion-acoustic drift instability in an inhomogeneous plasma

The effect of an external electric field at a frequency ..omega../sub 0/ of the order of the ion-acoustic frequency ..omega../sub s/ on the gradient ion-acoustic instability of an inhomogeneous plasma in a fixed magnetic field is analyzed; it is shown that the pump field is influential only at parametric resonance, ..omega../sub 0/approx. =2..omega../sub s/. If it is strong the rf field can suppress the gradient ion-acoustic instability. (AIP)
