A study is made of the parametric excitation of drift-cyclotron waves in an inhomogeneous plasma containing two ion species in a homogeneous alternating electric field with frequency $omega$$sub 0$, where $omega$$sub 0$ is of the order of the ion cyclotron frequency $omega$/sub Bi/. It is shown that the inhomogeneity of the plasma is important in a weak pump field when uapproximately- less-thanv/sub Ti/(rho/sub i//a)(u is the velocity of relative motion of the ions in the field of the pump wave, v/sub Ti/ and rho/sub i/ are the ion thermal velocity and Larmor radius, and a is the characteristic inhomogeneity scale of the plasma). Under these conditions, the most unstable modes have frequencies of the order of the drift frequency; the growth rates are smaller than those for a homogeneous plasma. (AIP)
