Parametric excitation of drift-cyclotron instabilities

The parametric excitation of drift-cyclotron waves is analyzed for the case of a slightly inhomogeneous plasma in an alternating electric field at a frequency of the order of the ion gyrofrequency. The relative velocity of the electrons and ions is assumed much lower than the ion thermal velocity. The growth rate and instability thresholds are derived. The stabilizing role of ion-collisions is discussed. The role of these instabilities in rf plasma heating is discussed.
