Confirmation of O/sup -/ formation in. gamma. -irradiated 10 M NaOH/H/sub 2//sup 17/O alkaline ice glass by electron paramagnetic resonance studies

The EPR identification of /sup 17/O/sup -/ in ..gamma..-irradiated 10 M NaOH glassy ice containing 34 atom percent oxygen-17 is confirmed at both X and Q band. The ion is characterized by lines g = 2.070, g = 2.002, and A = 99 +- 3 G. The spin density is largely localized in a 2p orbital on O/sup -/ (approximately 0.69), but a significant fraction seems delocalized onto the surrounding matrix.
