ENDOR investigation of the F$sup +$ centre in Mg$sup 17$O

ESR and ENDOR were used to investigate the F/sup +/ centre produced by neutron irradiation in MgO crystals enriched in the isotope /sup 17/O. A study was made of the hyperfine interactions between the trapped electron and /sup 17/O nuclei at the first four anion shells neighbouring the oxygen vacancy. The resuits are consistent with a wave function in which most of the unpaired spin is in 2p orbitals on the twelve nearest C/sup 2-/ ions with smaller adnnixtures of 3x and 3p orbitals on the six nearest Mg/sup 2+/ ions. There is also evidence for small 2p admixtures at further O/sup 2-/ sites. (auth)
