We have investigated the multiplicity of charged particles emitted forward and backward in the c.m.s. in ..pi../sup -/p and ..pi../sup -/n interactions at 40 GeV/c. The multiplicity distributions have the same form for ..pi../sup -/p and ..pi../sup -/n interactions in the forward hemisphere and are different in the backward hemisphere. A positive correlation is observed between the average multiplicity of particles in one hemisphere and the number of particles in the other, which is identical for ..pi../sup -/p and ..pi../sup -/n interactions.
