Multiplicity distributions and correlations of secondary charged particles in the forward and backward hemispheres in the c.m.s. are studied in ..pi../sup -/p-italic interactions at P-italic = 40 GeV/c-italic. It is shown that the average multiplicities of secondary particles in the forward (in the quark fragmentation region) and in the backward (in the diquark fragmentation region) hemispheres in ..pi../sup -/p-italic interactions are approximately equal to one half of the average multiplicities of particles in e-italic/sup +/e-italic/sup -/ annihilation and p-italicp-italic interactions, respectively. Multiplicity correlations are observed between slow particles emitted forwards and backwards in the c.m.s. (Vertical Barx-italic/sub F-italic/Vertical Bar< or =0.1). It is shown that they are caused by the correlations between oppositely charged particles emitted into opposite hemispheres. Fast particles (Vertical Barx-italic/sub F-italic/Vertical Bar> or =0.1) are produced independently.
