Charged-particle asymmetry in. pi. /sup -/p interactions at 40 GeV/c and the quark model

The asymmetry of the charged-particle spectra dsigma/sub ..pi..//dx and of the average multiplicity of the particles emitted forward and backward in the c.m.s. are investigated for ..pi../sup -/p interactions at p = 40 GeV/c. The results are discussed from the point of view of the quark model.
