Knowledge of the solubilities of BaSO/sub 4/ and SrSO/sub 4/ in solutions containing NaCl, CaCl/sub 2/, MgCl/sub 2/, and NaHCO/sub 3/ is needed to solve geologic and petroleum production problems. Samples of the sulfates were tagged with /sup 35/S and prepared by precipitation. The solubility was measured in various concentrations of the major solutes by use of a liquid scintillation technique to detect the SO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ in solution. The observed solubilities plotted against ionic strength of the solution are similar for strong electrolytes. They reach a maximum at concentration levels beginning at ionic strength of near 1. The sulfate solubility in synthetic brines (principally NaCl) confirms the ionic strength-sulfate relationships.
