Peak shaving slices high demand. [Buckeye Power Inc. , Ohio defers water heater load]

Using existing generating units more effectively provides one way to cope with the rising cost of new capacity. Buckeye Power Inc., an Ohio generation--transmission cooperative, avoids high demand charges by shaving its peak with a computerized system that automatically cuts off power to residential water heaters at times of heavy demand. The system monitors Buckeye's total kW demand, calculates whether a new peak for the year is imminent, and if so, triggers radio-controlled switches installed at customer water heaters. In the Winter of 1974-75, such a deferral fewer than a dozen times resulted in savings of over one-third million dollars. Operational characteristics, operating techniques, and an economic evaluation of this peak-shaving procedure are described. (LMT)
