Utilities have finally begun to cast a more favorable eye towards emergency generating systems for peak shaving applications. An advantage of such systems is that the utilities do not have to maintain excessive spinning reserves, and the emergency generators will provide the facility with the necessary power to operate the various peak loads to eliminate the peak power demand charges. Various types of peak loads and methods of controlling them are discussed, and methods of control involved in peak shaving, which can vary from a simple, manual operation to a highly sophisticated, fully automatic, unattended peak shaving system, are described.
