How they did it: radiographing the Liberty Bell

A detailed description of the equipment and procedures used in the radiographic inspection of the bell is given. Need for the inspection arose because of plans to move the bell into an enclosure about a block away from Independence Hall to allow a greater number of people to see it than would be possible in the confines of the Hall during the Bicentennial Year. Although additional cracks were found, the radiographs showed that the bell could be safely moved. (TFD)
