Though numerous inspection techniques exist, many weld inspectors are especially comfortable with RT. The technique has several advantages, not the least of which is the extensive experience most inspectors already have in interpreting radiographs. It should be noted that many people still make a distinction between x-rays and radiographs, defining x-rays as film produced by an electrical device emitting x-radiation, while radiographs are produced using either x-rays or radioactive isotopes that emit gamma radiation. The RT methodology used by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) includes both techniques, but since there are several distinct differences, many inspectors continue to use the above description. Here, several tips and techniques are presented to aid in the interpretation of radiographic test film.
