Data are presented on the combined characteristics of pions (of all types) in multinucleon interactions of carbon nuclei with nuclei of tantalum and carbon at 4.2 GeV/{ital c} per nucleon. It is shown that the combined energy expended on the average in production of pions is {ital k}{sub {pi}}=0.23{plus minus}0.02 of the total kinetic energy of the interacting nucleons of the incident nucleus and depends only weakly on the type of target and on the various selections of multinucleon interactions. A comparison of the experimental results with a statistical model is made. Moments are obtained of the distributions in the total longitudinal momentum and in the sum of the moduli of the transverse momenta for {pi}{sup {minus}} and {pi}{sup +} mesons and {gamma} rays in CTa interactions. The experimental values of the moments are compared with predictions based on the assumption of an independent nature of interaction of the nucleons of the incident nucleus with the target nucleus.
